Did You Know?
The story of Valentine's Day started with a Roman emperor named Claudius, Legend has it that Claudius struggled to recruit volunteers to join his army. Rather than attribute the men's lack of enthusiasm to his unpopularity (and, apparently, he was a very unpopular ruler), he decided that romance and marriage were the culprits, and he forbade the men and women of his province to celebrate love and to marry.
St-Valentine - an ardent defender of love - defied the Emperor's orders and secretly performed marriage ceremonies, until, one night, he was caught and sentenced to death. While imprisoned, people came from miles around to visit him and throw flowers and notes up to his window to let him know that they, too, believed in love. One of these admirers was the daughter of the prison guard, and on February 14, the day of his execution, St-Valentine left her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. He signed the note, "Love from your Valentine." And, from that day forward, the anniversary of his death became a day to celebrate love's resiliency and beauty.
